The app is just a bloated journal and vocal recorder. There’s an entire page of buttons with musical notes and slides but no function. Every time I try to email the app crashes. I can’t believe I spent $3 on this.
It’s great cuz it’s easy to use and certain features make it great… If your phone is in low battery mode it won’t go dark where the app is running. Also it takes up much less memory on your phone than voice recordings. I also use it to send songs I’ve written via email to myself and friends. The quality is as good as can get for phone recording. It normalizes your recordings. I love this app. Salvador Bella Songwriting is my YouTube
The app has been crashing within 30 seconds of being opened. This is consistently happening until I turn Dropbox sync off. The app works without it, but I’m concerned about not having my work backed up, and also not sure how I’m going to move hundreds of song ideas from this phone the new one I want to buy, without the Dropbox functionality. Currently looking for a new songwriting app solution until the dev is able to address the sync issue. I emailed them a couple of times over the last week but received no reply, so I’m not hopeful at the moment.
So I lost a lot of song ideas on my iPad. Big deal? Huge deal. I loved this app. And maybe I can recover my files from a backup, but I doubt it (for technical reasons I won’t get into). If Hum doesn’t support iPad, then finding out by losing files shows a lack of transparency for an app meant to STORE DATA. HUM is only capable of storing data from ONE device? Did I miss the warnings? And the file names in Dropbox are “code” not the titles, like the ones Hum assigns when you fail to type a title. Not only THAT, audio goes to one folder and text to another. Not only that, but don’t change anything in Dropbox or you may screw it all up. Maybe I missed the warnings. Except I didn’t. Granted, you can save any given file however you want, one-by-one. But why bother when you get Dropbox, mostly to sync your numerous recordings? I love Hum, but one more complaint: is it me or did the sound quality drop from iPhone 7+ to 13? Sloppy.
Won’t share with voice memos or messenger. Wondering if this app is even supported anymore. A few years since last release. How do I get my money back.
I like to start with lyrics on paper, once things start to come together, this app makes the details so easy to capture. I love this app!
Hum makes better recordings than Voice Memos, but lately has been very spotty when attempting to share files. The sharing is a big part of making the recordings in the first place, so I’m really wishing the developers of the app would update it so we can get back to making sweet music together. This review turns into 5 stars once it’s updated!
This is like voice memos, but it adds some basics that are essential for keeping song ideas organized.
For me, songwriting has always been a disorganized process. Different ideas come in different ways; including lyrics that will sit for a year, guitar parts that don’t have any accompanying thoughts, and sometimes full songs that come all at once. This process wasn’t helped by needing to use multiple services to capture ideas in many different places. Hum has really helped me localize all of my ideas and processes in one area to be able to see the canvas in whole and work on ideas for as long as inspiration is available. Additionally, seeing ideas along side one another in a list, I can look for thematic elements and work to either eliminate duplication in songs or look for areas to combine ideas. Within minutes of using Hum, I knew it where it would add simplicity to my process. That simplicity helps me utilize tools in the most efficient process so I can get out of my own way when I’m feeling inspired.
great except for when it won’t play my old files—a lot of them have been lost. the file is still there, but when I try to hit play, nothing was saved.
I have never rated an app just due to laziness i guess.. lol BUT i was moved to rate Hum. I have tried ALL songwriting apps and I just keep coming back to Hum! I will say i have only had one issue since 2015 when i got it first. That was just recently when it started shutting down after a few minutes. I emailed support and the short time it took for them to respond and fix my issue, i had to use another app for my ideas. I swear it felt like a fish out of water. Hum is my comfort zone! It was very odd feeling of something not right. It really cramped my creativity! I just love everything about it and how easy it is to just get what you need out of it. I will say i have a deep southern drawl and most speech recognition deals cant understand but Hum is the best at quickly figuring it out. Just thought i needed to let them know. Thanks for a great app! Curt
Hum has been an amazing tool and it’s totally changed my songwriting. I’ve used it for many years and absolutely love it. Only problem is that it keeps crashing recently...not sure what’s going on but it usually crashes upon opening the first time. Sometimes it starts working fine the second time, but not always :/
I paid for this app right away based on a youtuber’s review. It’s easy to use which is great Buuut when I did a test Email I saw that only Lyrics were sent, the Song Writer app sends lyrics and audio (free app). Also, I wish this had lines so I can write out tabs,(if other apps can do tab so can you:) other ideas requests: Can take photos of the ideas I had already written in a journal (then I would get to fixing things later) ummm and Apple Pencil/OCR capability 😄 ... I can change rating when the emailing audio issue is fixed
Guys if you are a songwriter you need this app, seriously. I can’t imagine where I’d be with my songs if I had this app years ago. ALL OF YOUR SONG IDEAS EASILY ORGANIZED IN ONE PLACE. This is exactly what I’ve been looking for. No hassle, very intuitive. I make a folder for each song I’m working on and then record my song ideas into that specific folder, and it makes it extremely easy to name your recording and write notes or lyrics with it. No more searching for your ideas in a giant list mostly unnamed recordings. You literally never have to loose or misplace a song idea again with this app. Come on, 3 bucks just get it! So worth it, it will make your life so much easier
This app is fantastic, I’ve used it for years now and I recommend it to all of my friends that write music. Thank you to the creators!
I’m a professional songwriter. Was hoping this was great, but it lacks and does NOT imports audio files.
I too have been faithfully using this app for many years, but now my files are suddenly disappearing without a trace. It’s beyond frustrating, but I have hope. Devs please help ASAP, so we don’t have to move on. Save HUM! ✌️❤️
I have emailed support to no avail. The sole desire in using HUM , lies in the functionality of importing a music file and recording over it.
I’ve tried a lot of apps. This one is by far the best. So easy to use and I don’t have to think... open, hit record, and write. Thanks Hum!!!!
I have had him for about a year. Every week it gets better with consideration from the users! I’ve been able to lock down and reall organize my pieces. New idea: multiple recordings within lyrics to separate segments I.e intros, verses, choruses, outros, miscellaneous ideas? One long recording is powerful but Segmented multiple recordings a piece would be PHENOMENAL!
I really really love this app, I’ve been using it for about a year now, and it’s absolutely fantastic. I would love for it to have to ability for multiple voice recording in one file. I find it a bit annoying when I have to record the voice again when I change my mind about the guitar.
I would be lost without HUM. Fast, easy, intuitive, I love this app. Wherever and whenever I get a musical idea, I sing it or play it into Hum, synched automatically to my Dropbox, and I never will lose it. Keys and chord notations, lyrics and riffs, all get saved. Get it!
I love, love, LOVE this app. It has everything I want except I just have one suggestion - it would be great if I could create multiple audio files for each file! Because sometimes I have to add onto the audio file later, and if I could either edit the existing one or create new ones I would be happy with that. Thank y’all again!!
Spent 7 hours working on a song today. Had the lyrics, key, color, mood, speed and audio in Hum. When I went for a drive I tried to listen to the song and it completely vanished from the app. It is nowhere to be found. It’s not on Dropbox either. Please make sure you use another medium for storing for material, since this app is not trustworthy...
I’m using an iPhone 8 with updated software as of 1/15/2017. When I type anything in a Hum, it undies everything I’ve done and moves the cursor to the very end of the lyrics. This happens every 15 seconds or so, which means I have to type a whole song in the native Notes app, copy the whole thing, paste it into Hum, and hit the back arrow to return to the folder before it undoes everything. Going back saves whatever’s there that hasn’t already been undone by the app, so if I’m typing in the app while lyric ideas are still fresh in my mind, it’s a guessing game between losing it forever and going back only to return to that him and continue writing. This makes the app unusable.
I’ve been using this app here and there as for when I’ve suddenly got an idea or tune on my mind out of the blue, which will dissipate very quickly if no action is taken. This app allows me to hum the tune and write the lyrics ASAP along side each other so you can see both at the same time. Sweet! I’ve never seen that feature before. One HUGE complaint/request I have is if there can be a version of this you can get for MacBook or other Apple laptops/notebooks, where Hum “ideas” could be imported through iTunes? Please? That way I could transport all my small stuff to a laptop where I can really sort it all out and such and use there. Thanks a bunch! This is a great app.
I use this all the time. The best thing is you have everything in one place for a song you’re writing. Highly recommend this app!
I am also a long time user of the Songwriter app as well as SongHub. The Hum app is very simple and easy to use but lacks some key features that would make it a great songwriting app. What I Like 1. It's simple and easy to use. 2. Clean modern design. 3. My favorite feature is the notes section. This is a feature that I have never seen in any other songwriting app. It gives you a place to try new lyrics and lines without messing up the basic lyrics you already have. If you could see some of my works in progress, you would understand why I love this. Needed Features 1. Folders so you can have your Ideas, In Progress and Completed songs separated instead of all bunched together. 2. The ability to create song sections within a song that can be rearranged. 3. The ability to hide the recorder at the bottom to give you more screen real estate. 4. An iPad version with syncing to use when performing. This is my first take and I will probably update this review once I get more time with it. Enjoy!
I have been a hard core, verbally supportive user of Songwriter HD for gong on 4 years. I talked countless songwriters into buying it, and now, unfortunately, the developers sold it to someone who is not updating and has no intention of updating. Getting notifications from Apple and Dropbox Songwriter HD will soon be useless. I get no response from anyone when I look for answers. Thankfully there is an heir to the throne with Hum. Does everything it should do and everything it claims to do. This is the new songwriter's dream and my new go-to tool. The price absolutely can't be beat for all it does. I am very picky about the app I use for writing my songs, and believe me, if I have suggestions for improvement, I hound the company. For now, though, Hum is on the right track. I hope they plan on sticking around. It says this is iPhone only, but it works on my iPad Pro, it just looks weird. All my support is here. If you are a songwriter in need of an app for writing, Hum is the way to go.
But I have all the time in the world if you want it to succeed.
Seriously. Just finished with the recording sessions and it's in post production, so I was looking toward the next project and seeing if there had been any updates to this app, because I wanted to use it again. Very glad to see that development is continuing, however slow the pace may be. It has its downsides, but they are outweighed by the usefulness of the songwriter-oriented features. Buy the tuner IAP. I know you have a billion tuners around already, just throw them a buck and help to support this great app.
iPad and multiple tracks soon please. I can't get enough of hum
Would be perfect for me with 3 things 1. Being able to have multiple recordings in one "hum". I'd like the ability to record a chorus/bridge/verse as separate recordings in the same place 2. Ability to add custom tunings as opposed to a pre-defined list 3. iCloud integration! Some of us don't use Dropbox.
I enjoyed the app because of my songwriting ability. I love creating songs, however, it needs to add social media for sharing peers who is interested in any song. Maybe if there's an upcoming upgrade, sharing via social media will be better
If you added a rhyme dictionary this would be perfect. Maybe even a thesaurus?
Simply the best place to store your song lyrics. The user interface is surgically efficient and sorting your lyrics using the built in methods for classification is quite satisfying. That being said, I still use Apple's voice memos app for recording the melodic ideas that pop into my head. But for writing lyrics this is a must-have.
This app is RIDICULOUS. It's perfect. I've been living life with it for about six months and have had no issues at all. I love the new color coating feature. Keep it up Hum. developer team! This app will be huge soon.
This app is simple and intuitive. I've been using two different apps to get audio and then text. This is exactly what I needed. There is room for this app to grow and add some features that I think would be helpful. I gave this five stars because this app is very useful as is. The app currently only lets you record one audio file and attach it to the lyrics. I would like to be able to record either more than one audio file, as songs grow or just be able to append a new recording to the end of the old recording. One other option I think the makers of this app should consider is having a one button chord player. Basically, have all of the basic chords show up on the screen as a small button per chord. Pressing the button on whatever chord you want would create a piano or guitar sound of the chord. This would be really helpful if I'm writing on the road without my guitar or piano. Being able to select or create more intricate chording would be a plus. For two bucks, this is a no-brainer if you write songs.
It's an easy way to write and organize song ideas. Great stuff! I use Hum more than anything on my phone.
I've been looking for an app like this for a while! So stoked to find it. Perfect for recording songs and lyrics and keeping everything organized. I have a lot of spontaneous jams and lyrics and I find it difficult to keep them all in separate apps, unorganized. This eliminates that problem. Fantastic!
For some reason this review seems to not be appearing on y'all's page and that just ain't right--you guys deserve some recognition for this product. I literally use it DAILY. constantly coming up with silly melodies or song ideas and this helps me keep it all collected. One of the few apps i consistently recommend to my friends. Does exactly what it's supposed to without error. Very fast. Conveniently raises the volume on quiet recordings (or maybe im just crazy...). Incredibly easy to use and share recordings with friends. I just love it, man! My only wants & desires: the labels are nice but SO small--it would be nice to have thicker/name-attributable labels in the future. while that's just a minor inconvenience, a full-fledged folder system would be great for organizing what will soon be 200 hums in my library. AND FINALLY...the holy grail...being able to save multiple takes/audio tracks on one Hum!! That would be a lifesaver. I have one song with multiple ideas stretched out over six different Hums right now hahaha. It's certainly not debilitating but it would streamline my use of the app SOOO much better. Keep up the great work guys. As again, i've been raving about this thing out here in Chicago. It's just too good (and cheap!)
25 years playing music and writing songs, and - as game-changing the iPhone and a few solid but limited recording apps were for the process - this app feels like the natural evolution of that first step. Easy and accessible, yet intuitively deep for keeping musical ideas from becoming the usual disjointed mess. No more "Where did I put those lyrics?" or listening to a separate track as you flip between paper or a word processing app. Hum gets it right, and it's pretty clear they've been through the messy side of the process before, and simplified it in the best way possible - by condensing it to its most fundamental needs. Extremely well done to start, and I can't wait to see future upgrades...but it's so darn good, I will, and happily. Only suggestion, and it's not a gripe or criticism: if you can enhance the audio fidelity via adding flexibility to each song's bitrate or file type, you'll cover every base need and then some. Kudos are we deserved here, so thanks to the dev team for this one!!
This is essential for every song writer with an iPhone. I absolutely love it.
This App is straight up Dope. As an avid songwriter I have tried multiple song writing apps. All fall short. This app is very very simple and clean. The guys behind this are killing it on the updates as well. Bringing bigger and better features, such as the ones mentioned. I would pay much more for an App like this.
The app is great! Definitely the easiest to use and most intuitive of the songwriting apps for iPhone. Love the new Dropbox sync, which works great. The developer is super responsive to questions and feature requests. Can't wait for future versions! The only reason it gets 4 stars is because I really want an iPad version and support for in-line chords. It would remove steps for taking my material into the studio to work on. I'd give it 6 stars then!
Now that Dropbox support is in, this app has everything I could ask for for a songwriting app! Thank you thank you thank you for the update and for the amazing app!
Simply amazing...I've been searching forever for something this simple and eye appealing. 5/5 stars easily....worth the price I promise.
I'm now iPad only and the blown up iPhone app does not inspire. An iPad app could really expand your user base as most musicians I know use their iPads for music idea storage. It would also make me a happy fellow. Thanks for the nice app.
This is the best, most simple songwriting app out there. Amazing for recording lyrics and saving song ideas. Songwriting is amazingly emotionally relieving and honestly don't think that I would be alive if it weren't for my use of this app
